The problem of what is called PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) had become obvious after the Vietnam War in the 1970’s in the USA.
But of course there were so many psychologically disabled veterans during WWⅡin Japan, although the Japanese military never accepted such existance as they believed that the Emperor’s army was too strong and too brave.
Here we can show you with these medical charts that many Japanese soldiers at the front –though they were nothing but attackers–felt pain and fear.
The patient-soldiers had been completely ordinary people before coming to the front; for example tofu makers, carpenters, farmers, or so on. But they were suddenly thrown into an atmosphere of violence and murder far away from the peaceful hometowns where their families remained. We can see their mental conditions at the front from these documents.
These documents were left in the ex-military hospital called Kounodai Military Hospital in Chiba prefecture which specialized as the only mental hospital in Japan. Just after Japan was defeated, Japanese government ordered all the public and military offices to burn all documents. Kounodai Military Hospital was no exception, but the doctors understanding the patients’ pains well, did not obey the order and put the documents into the steal drum cans, dug holes, and hid them.

This time we reprinted the charts of 407 cases of soldiers with newrasthenia sent to Kounodai Military Hospital in volume 1 and 2. In volume 3 we reprinted the charts of 156 cases of various types of shell shock cases sent to Shibata Military Hospital in Niigata prefecture.
We can see the Japnanese soldiers’ state of mind at the areas of invasion from the 1930’s to 1945 from these documents.
